For Ex-Felons and Family members of Ex-Felons – How hard has it been to find a decent job?
I want to know who really suffers when we block people from working if they have been convicted of a felony.
My personal view for what it’s worth is that everyone should have a chance to work and earn a DECENT WAGE but many of our laws and rules in the work place bar people with records from working.
For instance if you’re a convicted felon in some states you can’t get a license to be a BARBER or a REALTOR. Why? I understand not letting a convicted felon working in a situation that got them into trouble in the first place. I wouldn’t necessarily let a convicted bank fraud felon work in a bank. But if we continue to block people from so many jobs we reduce their alternatives. I would rather have an ex-felon or ex-con working hard everyday for a living than waiting for me to come home from a hard day at work and knocking me in the head for money to eat and survive.
Let people WORK!

Amazing question…..easy answer…..no matter what you convey to the prospective employer..they see that ONE BLOCK and won’t even consider you…even if they say they will.
My experience is this! I was a manager of a store and cooked the books. I paid a HORRIBLE price…..lost my house, car, husband and kids. DO YOU THINK FOR A MINUTE I would subject myself to that again.
I would be the most complete employee any company could hope to have….given the chance. As a matter of fact…put in the same situation, I could probably point out every employee who is currently LOOTING!
I feel you, I just wanted to say that.
I’m a social worker, and one of my hardest chores is getting jobs for ex-felons. Especially in a small town, people remember what’s happened and are slow to forgive.
My brother was released two years ago and he was working as a welder in prison. He had a job the day after he got out. I think a lot of depends on what the work is. But most of the time felons will be working crap jobs for a long time before a lot of people will trust them again.
Its understandable and you served your time. No, it’s not fair but the law is not always fair in my experience. No point in hitting your head against a brick wall. Work around it and the more time that passes since your felony, the easier it will be. See you need time to show you will not reoffend. Time is the only thing that can show that.
decent… is a matter of personal oppinion, however many companies and individuals will hire an ex felon if they show innitiative and positiveness. It’s a matter of settling for less than you want and giving more than is expected. Most have experienced jail or the threat of so if the individual has this awareness, they’ll find work in a hot hurry!!!
I agree. I know someone that is caught in this paradox. To get a decent job, convicted felons pretty much have to know someone that is willing to give them a chance.
Unfortunately, in our society there are a lot of people who do not want to give 2nd chances to people. Additionally, a lot of people do not care about their fellow man. This combination makes a cold, hard, uncaring society.
I have many friends who have been convicted of crimes. I call them friends because I believe they are good people. It is unfortunate that a bad decision can change your life so drastically. The system that is in place is made to punish people for their crimes. A better system might be to help the convicted criminal get treatment or gain skills to get out of the mind state that landed them in jail. I’m not saying that all criminals are able to be upstanding citizens but we can try harder to help those who have the potential to contribute to society. Anyone can land in jail. Everyone deserves a second chance.
my dad went back to work at the same place he was working before he got arrested. i guess he was lucky
