The Federal Trade Commission has primary jurisdiction. That is where you report it ( on-line) and get a kit to fill out and send to the credit agencies etc.
The FBI investigates cases when a lead has been established (most people steal more than one ID).
Local police and State agencies have limited resources since it is usually interstate, but will do what they can. States Attorney General are the most involved on the statewide basis.
they do nothing its a joke
you go to the cops and you tell them that someone toke my identity and see what they say and if that dont work you take it to the news are help me hower they will have you
ID Theft is a cybercrime; you should check under the title of cybercrime.
Since the nature of internet is borderless, it normally get FBI involved. Local police only take the report and then do a preliminary investigation. The perpetrators would normally in other state and tlocal police has to forward the case to FBI.
Beside local police, you can use http://www.ic3.gov to file your complain.
Since the usual way to sniff your id is via phishing, you should also check the topic of phishing.
Beside investigation, FBI and Federal Trade also responsible to education. Department of Justice is for persecution.
