social security (possible fraud) question?
hi, my friend is 17, and her wallet was stolen a few years back with her ss card. she is now afraid that people have used her #, but not sure what to do. we told her to go to the ss office and get a credit report. but what if someone had used her card, what would her actions be? she is now applying to college too, would that hinder anything?

she really needs to pull a credit report AND visit the SSA. college itself shouldn’t be impacted by this, but FAFSA forms and subsequent issues revolving around futuretax filings and reportable income on the SSN could become a major issue.
First of all, if she hasn’t reported the loss to ss, she should do so and get a replacement card. Second, someone may attempt to steal her identity. She needs to stay on top of her credit reports from the three credit reporting agencies (Equifax, transunion and experion) to detect any unusual activity in her name. She can get free reports annually from freecreditreport.com As long as her credit reports are correct, it should not affect her college app, car loan apps, etc.
It should not affect admission to college.
It would affect ability to get student loans to pay for college.
You cannot get credit reports at the ss office.
You go http://www.annualcreditreport.com to get free credit reorts.
You go to the ss office to get a new ss number IF the old one is being used for fraud.
