I have a term paper to write.. and the prompt is why college students are targeted for identity theft. I’m finding it really hard to think of three topics for this paper because I’ve never even heard of a college student being in that predicament.
This is all very new to me, I really don’t see why they’re targeted. I’m a college student and no one has tried to steal my identity o,O I have a credit card though .. it’s a victorias secret one if that’s any helpful.

found out there is a warrant out for felony misuse of credit card for me in ohio, however, i have never lived there, been there, nor do i know anyone that lives there. i definitely didnt do the crime!!!! called and was confirmed that a warrant is in my name, however i talked to someone about how it is ID theft, and how i have proof of living in a totally different state, in another part of the country. some secretary told me that i need to come there and turn myself in, but when i talked to someone else they told me to just talk to someone in fraud/theft and they will try to straighten it out so i wouldnt have to (live in louisiana). i am also pregnant, so i don’t want to go there and have to go to jail since i am almost 7 months along!! scared out of my mind!! should i just go to a lawyer and see what (s)he can do??? not sure where to go. filed a report with ftc.gov and fraud alerts. should i have to turn myself in when i didnt do it??
i did place fraud alerts on my credit report (got one after i found out about the warrant). and found 2 address in ohio, i’ve never lived there nor know anyone who has. and am working on getting that straight too…. worried because i dont want to go to jail when i didn’t do anything wrong, esp that!!!! not because i did it!

There is a company called "lookgreat" that is continously charging against every credit card that I use to purchase anything on the internet (no products that they provide). How do I prevent this from happening? The are able to collect any credit or debit card information that I provide. Is there software or something I can buy to end this? Do I need to take my computer to Best Buy or something? I don’t know what to do. Thanks!

Someone stole a newly delivered credit card from my mailbox and luckily I was able to block it. Today, I received mail informing me that a new Bank of America account had been opened with my SSN. I closed it. Now that someone out there does have my SSN what steps can I take. I already signed up for Credit Protection Services. Any help would be appreciated since I am not from this country.

I recently discovered that my identity was stolen and several "instant" department store credit cards were opened in my name. Luckily, I caught on since I got all these new cards that I didn’t request, reported it, and it is now under investigation.
Anyway, I’d like to know if the merchant has any liability in providing the cards outside of checking the ID of the perpetrator when they applied for the credit and processing the forms.
The person who did this had a fake ID with my info on it, but they provided a false telephone number (not even the correct area code) which I imagine would have raised a flag.
So, would it be prudent to go after the merchants that approved the cards? If so, what kind of law practice would do this type of thing?
Yes, these accounts were maxxed out on the day they accounts were opened using some sort of temporary credit card. I have never opened a card at a store so don’t know exactly how it works. All combined, 9 cards charged to the tune of about K…yipes!

I have had my credit card # stolen in the past and have never had a problem with having the charges forgiven. This is extra a year on my premium. Does anyone see any meaningful value with identify theft protection?

Someone stole my credit card and charged less than 0, and I don’t think it was a 1st offense. What charges does this carry if it is and is not a 1st offense, and what sort of punishment will he receive? We’re in Ohio.

I just handled a phishing e-mail that indicated my PayPal password had been changed. It was almost identical to a real password change notification except it told you to go to a website and login with your old password. The e-mail came from service784@security-paypal.com. I checked and a real notification came from service@paypal.com.
The link in the letter looked like a paypal.com url, but, instead took you to http://www.paylowpal.com/ . I spoofed an e-mail and password and was taken to http://www.paylowpal.com/wbsc.php where I was asked to provide all of the info from my credit card to verify who I was.
I WHOIS’d security-paypal.com and it was registered to:
Organisation Name…. Howard Sams
Organisation Address. 310 pine valley bridgeville,pa.15017
Organisation Address.
Organisation Address. bridgeville
Organisation Address. 15017
Organisation Address. PA
I WHOIS’d paylowpal.com and it is registered to:
Organisation Name…. Qiang Chiung
Organisation Address. P O Box 99800
Organisation Address.
Organisation Address. EmeryVille
Organisation Address. 94662
Organisation Address. CA
I reported it as a phishing site to Microsoft (tools – Phishing Filter – Report This Website).
I forwarded the entire e-mail to PayPal at spoof@paypal.com.
I then forwarded the e-mail and other information to US-CERT (US Computer Emergency Readiness Team) at http://www.us-cert.gov/nav/report_phishi… .
It is easy to see that both paylowpal.com sites were phishing sites. First the domain name sounds wrong. Then, neither site was a secured site (they would have started with https:… .
I hope others take the time to report phishing. It may prevent others from being victimized and, hopefully, your actions might help to lead to the prosecution and conviction of the person(s) committing the fraud.
Edit: Thanks James. I actually posted this as a warning and to show people what you can do to protect yourself. This may be a new one because it passed Microsoft’s phishing filter.

I was talking with someone the other day who suggested that this would be the perfect thing to stop identity theft. Scan it like a credit card when applying for lines of credit etc.
Do you think they own an aluminum foil hat too?

A month ago I follwed up on some garnishment charges on my paychecks from work that seemed a little suspicious. I thought that maybe one of my credit cards had a late payment and a fee was attatched to it, and this garnishment was the money I owed. Not so, it turned out that someone out there had obtained my social security number and took out a credit card (and lord knows whatever eles) and mistreated that card, racked up a bunch of late fees and was being sued. The trouble was since it was my number, I suffered. My question is can I sue a person for stealing my SS#, I know that ID theft is fraud and can land a person in jail, that much I do know. Any legal sound advice would be most helpful here.
Thanks

He opened a credit card in her name and wrote a check. It’s already accumulated late fees and interest. If she doesn’t press charges they call it family fraud and she has to pay the bill. Otherwise it’s grand larceny and he faces a felony charge.

I was bidding on a PropertyRoom.com auction and won the item I was bidding on. After winning another bidder compaline3d about my log-in name "Sorry Auction Closed". Propertyroom suspended my login and sent an email notifying me that I was in violation of the user agreement. However they said, via email, they would honor the auction since I was the high bidder. They processed a payment for the total auction amount of 508.80 and that amount was charged to my credit card. When they notified me of the charge I sent an email telling them I accept and I would pick up the item on a specific day. Now 6 days later, user agreement allows for 10 days to pick-up, they notify through email they have changed their minds and will not honor their original auction award. They have made an attempt to refund the original charge. What gives? Do I have a case against them for breach of contract? There was an offer, both parties accepted the offer and consideration was tendered. Any legal minds out there have any advice. I understand their issue but their resolution really put the cart before the horse. The item I purchased has substantial value to me and I would like to fight them.

Say for example.. someone else has been using your credit card for 2 weeks and incurred 0+ worth of theft. What will happen? Will your credit score go down? can you get the money back? can you catch the perpetrator?

Alright, my Xbox Live had a billing issue due to some stupid security card breach and stuff, so they suspended my account because I couldn’t pay with my old credit card.
Now it tells me to edit my profile under Account Management, but when I try to do that, it tells me I need to sign in.
When I click the Edit Profile in the popup box, it just logs me out for some reason. What do I do?

Lets say someone has a debt that went into default, only makes partial payments and never makes the account current. Credit Card for example. Does the SOL began on the first breach (late and never brought current), or does it renew with small partial payments? In in NC. Cant find a statute or anything. Thanks!!

I got served for breach of contract, and the person who took the judgment out on me, breached the contract himself! I emailed him yesterday though, asking him if he’d just allow my automatic deductions on my credit card monthly to remain active to satisfy the contract terms, and drop the judgment. He did not respond, and I asked him to if that would be acceptable to him. Guess he wants to take it to court. So, won’t it look bad on his part not to accept my offer to allow my current payment obligation to remain active. Won’t the judge consider him wasting the courts time on this if I agreed to continue making my payments as usual?

was there a breach of contract? If so on whom? Is the 100 dollars considered consideration?
I contract with pet care service to watch over my pets on an afternoon when I am unable to do so since I will be away on business. While on this trip, I will not be able to receive telephone calls. I pay 0 in advance on my credit card for this service in reliance that they will babysit my pets. On the day they are to look after my pets, the pet care service leaves a voicemail stating that they will be unable to watch my pets. They offer to refund the initial 100 dollars. I do not recieve the call until after I return from the trip since I was unable to receive phone calls.
Lets just say a neighbor realizes the pets are not being watched, and decides to care for them until I return.
*this is actually a a homework question. I would never leave my pet alone.

A family member stole a credit card from an elderly woman and charged 25. It has been reported to the company’s fraud department. What kind of punishment can she expect for her misdeed?

So my kid canceled his emusic.com acct because it was /month and he didn’t really use it. He canceled it July 2007.
I notice the money still hemmorhaging from my credit card acct, so I inquire… turns out another acct opened November 2007 under the email addy of the kid down the street (age 17, my kid’s practically lifelong friend).
I asked my kid- he says he has no other email addy other than the one I gave him, and never gave anyone my credit info. He’s aware now that there was fraud but he is not aware of WHO (supposedly) did this.
This is the 2nd time this has happened to me. Some yrs ago teenagers took my statement from my mailbox and charged phone sex. My kid had no involvement in that, either.
Our families have been close for years so this is VERY awkward for me. I’ve left a message on the voicemail for the neighbor kid’s mom to call me, but I have no idea what to say.
Don’t want to ruin the friendship, and boy howdy will this kid get his butt kicke
I have canceled the card and plan on reviewing my last yrs entire charge history with the bank to make sure no other unauthorized charges are on there.
