victim of credit report fraud?

I need some help. I’m 22 years old. Three years ago Experian put over 0,000 in debt, that did not belong to me, onto my credit report, the debt belonged to somebody with a similar name who lived in the same town as me. Needless to say my credit limit on my credit card got dropped to the minimum, I was denied a loan that I needed for college. It took me about 8 months to "resolve" the situation, and I’m still not very sure what was done to resolve the issue, only that my credit score improved, and my credit limit on my credit card improved. Before this incident I had a credit limit of ,000 on my credit card. After the incident it was 0. Then it went to 00 for about 3 years and only within the last two months did it return to 00. Obviously this set me back 3 years in terms of credit card credit limits.

I’ve never made a late payment in my whole life so this was exceedingly frustrating for me.

I recently applied for another credit card, and was approved. However I received a mailing of my credit score by Equifax, and it was lower than I expected, 660. This was puzzling because I’ve still never made a delinquent payment, and I’ve always paid all my credit cards and loan repayments in the full. I investigated and discovered that "I" owe 0 to a utility company that I’ve never had any business or accounts with. Once again, I’m a victim of false reporting credit reporting agencies, this time Equifax. I’ve filed a claim with Equifax to dispute this charge against me, but nothing has been resolved since.

What are my options? I don’t want to deal with this my whole life. Is there any way to protect myself from the credit reporting agencies? Is there a specific type of lawyer I can hire to protect me or an insurance policy?

I’m really looking for any kind of guidance and advice that you can give me.

Thank you all, in advance, very much for your help.
